Make an internship agreement

Once the company is ready to collaborate and would like to have you as an intern, you need to make a good agreement on how the internship should be.

When your efforts pay off and a company is interested in having you as an intern, there are only a few small details to take care of before you can start working with them.

First of all, you need to make a good agreement on how the internship should look. Additionally, the company needs to make an application to the Jobcenter in order to have you as an intern.

On this page, you'll find advice on how to make the internship agreement with the company and how you can help the company with the application process with the Jobcenter. Finally, you can learn more about the requirements the company needs to live up to in order for you to do an internship with them.

Tool 1: Make a good internship agreement

A good internship starts with alignment of expectations, where you and the company agree on how your internship will be. Several of these elements will also be used by the company when applying for having you as an intern.

Examples of what you and the company can agree on

Expand all

Agree on what tasks you'll do for the company

Get a clear understanding of what tasks the company wants you to do for them. Be as specific as possible in the dialog with the company so that you both agree on what you will be doing for them.

Instead of just agreeing that you will 'work with social media', agree on what you will actually do. Content for Facebook? A general social media strategy? A target group analysis?

Agree how many hours per week you will work for the company

Most people work between 30-37 hours per week in an internship. Please note that if the company wants you to work more than 37 hours, the internship cannot be approved by the Jobcenter. You should also discuss the distribution of working hours during the week and whether the working hours include lunch.

Agree on when you will start your internship

Find out what start date suits you both. Remember that the Jobcenter needs to approve your internship before you can start, so it is a good idea to have a start date that is at least a week from when the application is sent to the Jobcenter.

Agree on how you get feedback during your internship

During your meeting with the company you can ask how you can get feedback during your internship. Will you be assigned a permanent contact person? Does he or she prefer weekly scheduled meetings or ongoing dialogue? Alternatively, you can bring up the topic when you begin your internship.

Agree on next steps and who does what

It's a good idea to agree on what the next steps are. The company must apply for your internship, but you can help them along the way. As you can see below, you can send them an email with suggestions on how to fill in some of the fields in the application. It is a good idea to agree on who does what and when you will talk again.

Tool 2. Help the company with the application process at the Jobcenter

Before you can start your internship, we must approve it at the Jobcenter. One of the reasons for this is that you will be covered by the Jobcenter's occupational injury insurance in case you have an accident during your internship. Therefore, you can only start your internship once you have been notified by the Jobcenter that it has been approved.

The company applies for your internship through the website www.vitas.bm.dk. On YouTube you can find a video guide on how the company completes the application.

To make the process easier for the company, you can help them by making a draft of some of the points in the application. Below you find an email template with the points that you can customize and send to the company.

Internship description

Here you briefly describe what the internship is about. What will your tasks be and what new competencies and skills will you gain from the company?

On the website where the company applies for an intern, the “internship description” field states that you should write free text about the company and the skills required of the intern. You do not need to do this, as it is only relevant for companies that do not yet have an intern and would like the Jobcenter’s help in finding one.

Therefore, you can simply write a few lines about your tasks and what you want to get from the internship.

Desired number of hours and start date

Typical weekly hours for an internship are between 30 and 37 hours.

The start date should be at least one week after the application is sent to the Jobcenterm so the Jobcenter has time to approve the internship application.

Your CPR number

Your CPR number is needed by the Jobcenter so we can find your case and assign the internship to you.

If you don't want to send your CPR number in an email, you can send the email instead and then call the company and tell them the ten digits afterwards.

Tool 3: Help the company with the requirements

There are different requirements the company needs to live up to in order for them to take on an intern. The requirements are defined based on the legislation we work by at the Jobcenter. When we approve an internship, we always check that the company meets the requirements.

Below can see the most important companies requirements. If you are concerned whether the company meets the requirements, you are always welcome to contact us at the Jobcenter and we will help you navigate the requirements.

The main requirements for companies to get an intern are

Expand all

that the company meets the so-called 'Rimelighedskrav'

The term 'rimelighedskrav' means that the majority of the company’s employees must be employed on ‘standard terms’. For example, sole proprietorships and companies with less than five employees can only have one intern.

If the company where you would like to start an internship already has other interns or other employees in subsidized positions, you can check the ‘rimelighedskeac’ under the field 'Conditions for getting an employee in an internship'.

that the company is not your most recent place of work

Unfortunately, an internship cannot be approved if you've recently had a job, student job, freelance job, or other paid hours at the company.

By law, you cannot do an internship at a place that is your most recent workplace - no matter how long ago your most recent employment was.

This means, for example, that if you finished your employment with the company two years ago and have been looking for a job since then, you are not eligible for an internship with the company.

the company can offer a relevant internship for you

The internship must make sense for you in your job search. Therefore, the content and purpose of the internship should develop your competencies or give you new skills e.g. Overall, it should bring you closer to your next job.

An internship should never be set up just to fulfil the company's need for labor.

You will both get a call from the Jobcenter

Please note that both you and the company will get a call from the Jobcenter when we approve the internship application.
We typically call from either an unlisted or a standard number.
